Hey there fellow Bendites, i grew up here and moved to Eugene this last year and got to share an amazing experience of communal living. I personally havent heard of any communes around here..i dont know if they are just super underground, or if they are something of a mystical element here in Central Oregon. if not, i was wondering, i know this kinda a waky crazy not-gonna-happen-unless-we-all-really-set-our-minds-and-money-to-it type question but has anyone ever thought of trying to get one together? i've been doing my research and im interested..thoughts opinions feel free to shout back~

IRAQ WAR - It could be over....

If we vote for Ron Paul.....

This is Ron Paul's stance on the IRAQ WAR...HE IS the ONLY presidential candidate that wants to END the WAR..... ASAP. Senator McCain said he would stay another 100 years if we had to....

Mr. Speaker, allow me to offer another quote from Jefferson. Jefferson said: "No country perhaps was ever so thoroughly against war as ours. These dispositions pervade every description of its citizens, whether in or out of office. We love and we value peace, we know its blessings from experience."

We need this sentiment renewed in this Congress in order to avoid a needless war that offers us nothing but trouble. Congress must deal with this serious matter of whether or not we go to war. I believe it would be a mistake with the information that is available to us today. I do not see any reason whatsoever to take young men and young women and send them 6,000 miles to attack a country that has not committed any aggression against this country. Many American now share my belief that it would be a serious mistake.

The Spinsterz is moving to Bend!

Hola friends,

I am flying back from Guatemala this Tues 4th and I will be moving to Bend. I am looking for either a roommate situation or a place of my own under $700 per month.

Since I have a business to run, I would need a space to set up a small workshop to build my products and store my inventory. Part of a garage works well or possibility of renting two rooms. I don´t make much noise when manufacturing my products, maybe some light hammering and drilling every few days. I do have a pretty significant amount of inventory and shipping supplies, taking up about one whole side of a garage if I have it organized really well, which i would.

I am hoping to be into a place no later than the 10th. Please contact me if you can offer me something.
brandon@thespinsterz.com - better to email than tribe, cuz tribe doesn´t always load here in Guatemala. Thanks!

looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Brandon

I'm a small business owner in Redmond. I'm an IT Consultant. I cater to small and medium businesses. I even make house calls to persons with home offices. I have been working in the Central Oregon area for over seven years and have been in the IT Support field for ten years. I have supported systems as small as a two person office but as large as over 100 users, seven servers, and multiple wireless access points.

My largest client is a home builder. With the downturn of the market I'm forced to seek new clients. Hence the self promotion here. I can provide business references if requested.

So if you are in need of computer related support whether due to insufficient IT staffing or due to a poor level of service from your current provider please contact me. All contact information is available at www.thewinchesteragency.com.

Boomtown is closing it's doors forever. Digital media strikes down another brick and mortar buisness.

I worked there for 3 years, it was a home...that job got me out of Texas...I will forever be grateful.

It's done mid October, if you want to go in and say your goodbyes to a local buisness...you have about a month.

Help protect Oregon

Vote yes on Measure 49 this Nov.

Measure 49 will fix measure 37 which was advertised as an effort to protect the property right of individuals who wanted to build a few housed on their land if the law allowed them to do so whey they purchased the property. We voted for it but what we got out of 37: 7,500 claims for development covering over 750,00 acres of Oregon land much of it in protected forest and farmland, and in areas that ave limited groundwater for the families and wildlife that are already there. This sprawling development as a documented potential cost of $15 billion to Oregon taxpayers.

Measure 49 will protect the property rights of small individual landowners by allowing them up to 3 houses on their property if the law allowed it whey they bought their land.

They may also build up to 10 homes if they can document an equivalent financial loss and the extra houses are not on prime farm or forest land and do not threaten water supplies.

Measure 49 will also protect the places the make Oregon special. It will keep huge housing subdivisions, strip malls, and industrial developments out of areas where thy simply don't belong.

Facts on Measure 37
Both Hood river Valley and central Oregon are particularly hard hit by Measure 37. Hood River, Wasco, Jefferson, Deschutes and Crook counties have a total of 671 Measure 37 development claims, covering over 112,000 acres. Fore the sake of comparison, the entire city of Portland covers 85,,952 acres of land.

Example: Pumice NMine and Subdivision in Newberry Crater. LPP Resources Limited Partnership
This claim would put surface mining, geothermal power production and development of a 157 lot residential subdivision in the Newberry Crater National Monument. Otherwise, LPP demands over $200 million from taxpayers.

Example: Mining Operation on Protected Forestland
51 acres of protected forest would be converted into a miner extraction operation near Hood river.

Example: $513 Million compensation Demand to Tom McDonald
Demands taxpayers pay over $513 unless he is allowed to build a subdivision and a destination resort on 5,000 acres

Example: A single subdivision of over 15,000 cers Aspen Valley Limited Partnership
Aspen Valley demands $10 million in compensation if they are not allowed to subdivide over 15,000 acres into more then 3,000 lots.

Example: Mt. Hood Meadows
Developers have proposed a project to convert 891 acres of forestland high on the flanks of Mt. Hood into over 900 recreational housing units. This land includes a watershed which provides drinking water for over 25% of Hood River County. Otherwise, the developers are demanding cash compensation on development rights on public land.

Ask Kulongoski to Stop the Nuking of Portland

Ask Kulongoski to Stop the Nuking of Portland

Call on Gov Ted Kulongoski to cancel Operation Noble Resolve

Call on Gov Ted Kulongoski to cancel Operation Noble Resolve at least until some major issues are cleared up over the Presidential Directive 51 and the habit of some strategic games becoming simultaneous real events is fully investigated.

Congressman Peter DeFazio has been blocked in his investigations on the issues surrounding the planned event and its relationship to National Security Presidential Directive 51 which would give Bush dictatorial powers if such a real event like a nuclear attack on Portland did happen. Governor Kulongoski could address this issue and demand that state employees not comply or work with FEMA and other organizations planning Operation Noble Resolve until major issues and questions are satisfactorily answered. On July 20th of 2007 after refusal to have access to documents related to Presidential Directive 5, DeFazio "Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right." The fear is that like the Tube Bombing in London on 7/7 2005 and the 9/11 tragedy there were simultaneous mock events that were similar to the actual events taking place.

contacting Oregon Governor Kulongoski:

Please use one of the following methods if you would like to share an opinion or if the Governor´s Office can be of assistance:

MAIL
Governor Kulongoski
160 State Capitol
900 Court Street
Salem, Oregon 97301-4047
PHONE
Governor’s Citizens’ Representative Message Line
503.378.4582
FAX
503.378.6827

POSSIBLE STATE ALTERNATIVES TO OPERATION NOBLE RESOLVE

Governor Ted Kulongoski and Governor Christine Gregoire could propose alternatives to Operation Noble Resolve. One alternative could be to have strategic simulations on counter-dictatorial usuption of our federal system. This could be done by having mass teach-ins on administrative noncooperation, civil disobedience and other nonviolent actions as well as civics with mock events simulating a coups d'état in our federal system. In 1983, Dr. Gene Sharp had proposed that creating a civillian based defense using nonviolent tactics would be far more effective against invading and anti democratic forces as well as much more economically sustainable.
http://www.fragmentsweb.org/fourtx/sharplec.html

The two sister states of Oregon and Washington could host a training and implimentation of a civillian based defense in complete cooperation with the Oregon and Washington State National Guards. We could give such a civics training and mock events even a name like Operation Evergreen. This could be done with the cooperation of the various states’ educational systems, liberaries and other organizations both governmental and non-governmental.
NSPD 51 FROM WHITEHOUSE WEBSITE (for those not familiar with the Presidential Directive)

White House News

NATIONAL SECURITY PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE/NSPD 51

HOMELAND SECURITY PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE/HSPD-20

Subject: National Continuity Policy

Purpose

(1) This directive establishes a comprehensive national policy on the continuity of Federal Government structures and operations and a single National Continuity Coordinator responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of Federal continuity policies. This policy establishes "National Essential Functions," prescribes continuity requirements for all executive departments and agencies, and provides guidance for State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and private sector organizations in order to ensure a comprehensive and integrated national continuity program that will enhance the credibility of our national security posture and enable a more rapid and effective response to and recovery from a national emergency.

Definitions

(2) In this directive:

(a) "Category" refers to the categories of executive departments and agencies listed in Annex A to this directive;

(b) "Catastrophic Emergency" means any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions;

(c) "Continuity of Government," or "COG," means a coordinated effort within the Federal Government's executive branch to ensure that National Essential Functions continue to be performed during a Catastrophic Emergency;

(d) "Continuity of Operations," or "COOP," means an effort within individual executive departments and agencies to ensure that Primary Mission-Essential Functions continue to be performed during a wide range of emergencies, including localized acts of nature, accidents, and technological or attack-related emergencies;

(e) "Enduring Constitutional Government," or "ECG," means a cooperative effort among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Federal Government, coordinated by the President, as a matter of comity with respect to the legislative and judicial branches and with proper respect for the constitutional separation of powers among the branches, to preserve the constitutional framework under which the Nation is governed and the capability of all three branches of government to execute constitutional responsibilities and provide for orderly succession, appropriate transition of leadership, and interoperability and support of the National Essential Functions during a catastrophic emergency;

(f) "Executive Departments and Agencies" means the executive departments enumerated in 5 U.S.C. 101, independent establishments as defined by 5 U.S.C. 104(1), Government corporations as defined by 5 U.S.C. 103(1), and the United States Postal Service;

(g) "Government Functions" means the collective functions of the heads of executive departments and agencies as defined by statute, regulation, presidential direction, or other legal authority, and the functions of the legislative and judicial branches;

(h) "National Essential Functions," or "NEFs," means that subset of Government Functions that are necessary to lead and sustain the Nation during a catastrophic emergency and that, therefore, must be supported through COOP and COG capabilities; and

(i) "Primary Mission Essential Functions," or "PMEFs," means those Government Functions that must be performed in order to support or implement the performance of NEFs before, during, and in the aftermath of an emergency.

Policy

(3) It is the policy of the United States to maintain a comprehensive and effective continuity capability composed of Continuity of Operations and Continuity of Government programs in order to ensure the preservation of our form of government under the Constitution and the continuing performance of National Essential Functions under all conditions.

Implementation Actions

(4) Continuity requirements shall be incorporated into daily operations of all executive departments and agencies. As a result of the asymmetric threat environment, adequate warning of potential emergencies that could pose a significant risk to the homeland might not be available, and therefore all continuity planning shall be based on the assumption that no such warning will be received. Emphasis will be placed upon geographic dispersion of leadership, staff, and infrastructure in order to increase survivability and maintain uninterrupted Government Functions. Risk management principles shall be applied to ensure that appropriate operational readiness decisions are based on the probability of an attack or other incident and its consequences.

(5) The following NEFs are the foundation for all continuity programs and capabilities and represent the overarching responsibilities of the Federal Government to lead and sustain the Nation during a crisis, and therefore sustaining the following NEFs shall be the primary focus of

the Federal Government leadership during and in the aftermath of an emergency that adversely affects the performance of Government Functions:

(a) Ensuring the continued functioning of our form of government under the Constitution, including the functioning of the three separate branches of government;

(b) Providing leadership visible to the Nation and the world and maintaining the trust and confidence of the American people;

(c) Defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and preventing or interdicting attacks against the United States or its people, property, or interests;

(d) Maintaining and fostering effective relationships with foreign nations;

(e) Protecting against threats to the homeland and bringing to justice perpetrators of crimes or attacks against the United States or its people, property, or interests;

(f) Providing rapid and effective response to and recovery from the domestic consequences of an attack or other incident;

(g) Protecting and stabilizing the Nation's economy and ensuring public confidence in its financial systems; and

(h) Providing for critical Federal Government services that address the national health, safety, and welfare needs of the United States.

(6) The President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government for ensuring constitutional government. In order to advise and assist the President in that function, the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism (APHS/CT) is hereby designated as the National Continuity Coordinator. The National Continuity Coordinator, in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National

Security Affairs (APNSA), without exercising directive authority, shall coordinate the development and implementation of continuity policy for executive departments and agencies. The Continuity Policy Coordination Committee (CPCC), chaired by a Senior Director from the Homeland Security Council staff, designated by the National Continuity Coordinator, shall be the main day-to-day forum for such policy coordination.

(7) For continuity purposes, each executive department and agency is assigned to a category in accordance with the nature and characteristics of its national security roles and

responsibilities in support of the Federal Government's ability to sustain the NEFs. The Secretary of Homeland Security shall serve as the President's lead agent for coordinating overall

continuity operations and activities of executive departments and agencies, and in such role shall perform the responsibilities set forth for the Secretary in sections 10 and 16 of this directive.

(8) The National Continuity Coordinator, in consultation with the heads of appropriate executive departments and agencies, will lead the development of a National Continuity Implementation Plan (Plan), which shall include prioritized goals and objectives, a concept of operations, performance metrics by which to measure continuity readiness, procedures for continuity and incident management activities, and clear direction to executive department and agency continuity coordinators, as well as guidance to promote interoperability of Federal Government continuity programs and procedures with State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure, as appropriate. The Plan shall be submitted to the President for approval not later than 90 days after the date of this directive.

(9) Recognizing that each branch of the Federal Government is responsible for its own continuity programs, an official designated by the Chief of Staff to the President shall ensure that the executive branch's COOP and COG policies in support of ECG efforts are appropriately coordinated with those of

the legislative and judicial branches in order to ensure interoperability and allocate national assets efficiently to maintain a functioning Federal Government.

(10) Federal Government COOP, COG, and ECG plans and operations shall be appropriately integrated with the emergency plans and capabilities of State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure, as appropriate, in order to promote interoperability and to prevent redundancies and conflicting lines of authority. The Secretary of Homeland Security shall coordinate the integration of Federal continuity plans and operations with State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure, as appropriate, in order to provide for the delivery of essential services during an emergency.

(11) Continuity requirements for the Executive Office of the President (EOP) and executive departments and agencies shall include the following:

(a) The continuation of the performance of PMEFs during any emergency must be for a period up to 30 days or until normal operations can be resumed, and the capability to be fully operational at alternate sites as soon as possible after the occurrence of an emergency, but not later than 12 hours after COOP activation;

(b) Succession orders and pre-planned devolution of authorities that ensure the emergency delegation of authority must be planned and documented in advance in accordance with applicable law;

(c) Vital resources, facilities, and records must be safeguarded, and official access to them must be provided;

(d) Provision must be made for the acquisition of the resources necessary for continuity operations on an emergency basis;

(e) Provision must be made for the availability and redundancy of critical communications capabilities at alternate sites in order to support connectivity between

and among key government leadership, internal elements, other executive departments and agencies, critical partners, and the public;

(f) Provision must be made for reconstitution capabilities that allow for recovery from a catastrophic emergency and resumption of normal operations; and

(g) Provision must be made for the identification, training, and preparedness of personnel capable of relocating to alternate facilities to support the continuation of the performance of PMEFs.

(12) In order to provide a coordinated response to escalating threat levels or actual emergencies, the Continuity of Government Readiness Conditions (COGCON) system establishes executive branch continuity program readiness levels, focusing

on possible threats to the National Capital Region. The President will determine and issue the COGCON Level. Executive departments and agencies shall comply with the requirements and

assigned responsibilities under the COGCON program. During COOP activation, executive departments and agencies shall report their readiness status to the Secretary of Homeland Security or the Secretary's designee.

(13) The Director of the Office of Management and Budget shall:

(a) Conduct an annual assessment of executive department and agency continuity funding requests and performance data that are submitted by executive departments and agencies as part of the annual budget request process, in order to monitor progress in the implementation of the Plan and the execution of continuity budgets;

(b) In coordination with the National Continuity Coordinator, issue annual continuity planning guidance for the development of continuity budget requests; and

(c) Ensure that heads of executive departments and agencies prioritize budget resources for continuity capabilities, consistent with this directive.

(14) The Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy shall:

(a) Define and issue minimum requirements for continuity communications for executive departments and agencies, in consultation with the APHS/CT, the APNSA, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and the Chief of Staff to the President;

(b) Establish requirements for, and monitor the development, implementation, and maintenance of, a comprehensive communications architecture to integrate continuity components, in consultation with the APHS/CT, the APNSA, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and the Chief of Staff to the President; and

(c) Review quarterly and annual assessments of continuity communications capabilities, as prepared pursuant to section 16(d) of this directive or otherwise, and report the results and recommended remedial actions to the National Continuity Coordinator.

(15) An official designated by the Chief of Staff to the President shall:

(a) Advise the President, the Chief of Staff to the President, the APHS/CT, and the APNSA on COGCON operational execution options; and

(b) Consult with the Secretary of Homeland Security in order to ensure synchronization and integration of continuity activities among the four categories of executive departments and agencies.

(16) The Secretary of Homeland Security shall:

(a) Coordinate the implementation, execution, and assessment of continuity operations and activities;

(b) Develop and promulgate Federal Continuity Directives in order to establish continuity planning requirements for executive departments and agencies;

(c) Conduct biennial assessments of individual department and agency continuity capabilities as prescribed by the Plan and report the results to the President through the APHS/CT;

(d) Conduct quarterly and annual assessments of continuity communications capabilities in consultation with an official designated by the Chief of Staff to the President;

(e) Develop, lead, and conduct a Federal continuity training and exercise program, which shall be incorporated into the National Exercise Program developed pursuant to Homeland Security Presidential Directive-8 of December 17, 2003 ("National Preparedness"), in consultation with an

official designated by the Chief of Staff to the President;

(f) Develop and promulgate continuity planning guidance to State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and private sector critical infrastructure owners and operators;

Hi!

I am moving back to Bend in a week and am SOOOO excited. I have been gone for 10 years and have really missed it. I know that everything is so different than it was 10 years ago, but still awesome. Unfortunately, I got a whiplash injury last week and will need to find a good Primary Care Doc, Chiropractor, and LMT that specializes in whiplash injuries. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations as I need to get started in right when I get there and don't know anyone in the area. I can't wait to get there and meet all of you cool people. Thanks!
kitty needs a new forever home.

I have come the conclusion that 10 cats is just to many for me. I forstered a bunch of kittens a couple years back, with all the intentions of finding them homes, now 2 years later my house is overcrouded, and perfectly wonderious cats are acting up. My first placement would be Goober... and awesome short haired black (with the occasional white strangs) male neutered kitty. He is large for a cat... really lanky. He is a snuggler. when he gets comfurtable in his new home, he is known to come up and nuzzle himself against your face, and snuggle up in your lap. He has been raised in a house with other cats (obviousally) and with dogs, also has been around many children, ages 3 months to 10. I hate to have to let go, but i have realized i only have 2 hands, so much time, and that it is better to try to find him a new place now than let him be stuck here without the love he deserves.

please send me a note if you are interested.

Cascadian Bike Tour May 14 - 31st

Cascadian Bike Tour May 14 - 31st

I just got this post and think its a perfect event to unite causes and awareness of Cascadia. It would be nice to see photo graphics (ideally in the news paper) with this bike tour under the "Doug" (Cascadian banner). MAYBE a group from Bend could ride over the Cascades to join this tour?

I would think that causes could be represented like critical mass, local economy, Cascadian bioregional awareness, the free schools, anti-imperialism, ecological sustainablity, carbon free living, permaculture and so much more of what Cascadia should be and is.

the post I recieved:

Tribe Alert: Cascadians
From: Bryan
Title: What are the most noteworthy sustainability and...
I'm helping to organize and will be taking part in a bike tour from Vancouver, BC to Berkeley, CA, to help build awareness of and live out the ideals of the organization BALLE, the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. Our trip will take us through Oregon along the coast on Highway 101 (we may also be detouring through Portland for a day). I'd appreciate any recommendations for projects, businesses, and sites that are worth stopping for--independent, local businesses making a mark for their practices or promotion of local living economies, great sustainability and self-sufficiency demonstration sites, and the like. We are especially looking for places right along Hwy 101, as it is difficult for us to make our schedule while detouring much from our route.

The trip begins May 14 in Vancouver and ends May 31 in Berkeley. We expect to ride the Oregon coast May 18 - 24.

For more information on the bike ride (which is open to and seeking new participants!):
documentary description:

Pickaxe documents efforts to halt logging at Warner Creek, a federally protected forest in Oregon. Following a suspicious fire in 1991 that ... all » cleared the land, Congress suspended environmental regulations to allow logging in the area. Since arson was determined to be the cause of the fire, however, environmental activists argued that allowing logging at Warner Creek would set a bad example and possibly lead to similarly motivated forest fires. What followed was an 11-month battle complete with a 79-day hunger strike and an amazing blockade of a remote mountain logging road. This inspiring documentary shows the power of direct action, determination and good leadership.

I moved to this area 2 years, and recently found myself divorced, in a strange area, with no connections to anyone since the few friends I had made scattered in the rubble of my marrage. I am not looking to date, just for a group of people, who can are like minded, or open minded, and who I can share some fun times with. I am 32, and average human... like the outdoors, but a movie is dandy also. Have not experienced much of what there is to offer here in bend, and am looking for folks who like to teach a fledgling individual new things. I am looking for friendships with new people. folks to hang with.

about me... 32, divorced, born and raised in san francisco. some college, marine biology major. work for a vet, enviromental enthusiast, but not a snob. love street faires, worked renissance faires. love to sing and be outgoing, but an supper shy when i dont know folks. animal lover, gardener, hiker, biker, one tatoo and working on another. that is it.... in breif, i guess....

The epic fire show...

Fyreflyte will be performing at the Mirror Pond Plaza again on the 6th of April at 8:00 PM. Yes, it's first friday April!
This show is a BIG one, for several reasons; We are trying to raise a good amount of money for a benefit for Tricia Roth. Tricia, the sister of our own family member Rebecca, was in a serious accident in September last year and since then has been needing a high level of care and support as she learns to adjust to life on four wheels. Rebecca, a charter member of Fyreflyte and local acupuncturist has been travelling regularly to the Bay Area to provide that care and support for her sister for the last six months.
We want to help! With the love and support of the performing arts community here in Bend we are putting together a performance unequalled by anything Fyreflyte has done previously. We have involved all the members of the fire dance community and the musicians with the groups Coyo and Ubuntu have joined the cause to provide us the music to move to. The goal is to raise money to help with the long term care but also to show a distant family member that we love and care about her through our support and energy.
This show will be a musical and visual treat! Please come support us in this endeavor. Whether a donation, purchasing one of many great items at our silent auction or just coming to show your support for our family... Thank you, and we hope to see you there.

Hi, I'm sponsoring an amazing group of bellydancers (who also do fire) here in Bend on March 31. They are Unmata, from Sacramento, CA. They'll be coming up Friday and mentioned they'd love to do a short (15 minute) fire set someplace....I was thinking MIrror Pond cause I know it's done there...but I'm not sure what the protocol is for having fire in the city, I don't know if other local fire groups would be performing that night and I don't want to step on ANYONE'S toes!!

Fireflyte was suggested as a good contact for info...but I don't have any clue how to go about it...can someone help??

hi, the Homeless Teen Street Outreach Program that i work for is in need of your old, unused and unwanted bike donations. We currently have 14 residents in our transitional shelter in need of some pedal powered transportation, as well as, we help supply bikes to teens on the streets when needed. A rideable bike is ideal but willing to take one that might need a bit of love off your hands too. Preferably adult sized M/F frames 10 speed, cruiser, mt bike or bmx style. I will pick up at your place or you can drop off at ours. Feel free to email or call for more info.
Hoop dance workshop with Baxter in Eugene

Hi Bend residents,

Just a heads up, in case anyone is interested -- this upcoming Sunday, hoop master Baxter will be Eugene, teaching a three-hour intensive hoop dance workshop. (See class description below). Baxter is well known in the world of hoop dance and is prominently featured in the upcoming hoop dance documentary "Hoop: A Revolution of Sorts." The class will be at Corestar dojo from 2-5 p.m., Sunday Feb. 25. Price is suggested $40, with a sliding scale down to $25 for hoopers in need of financial assistance. It's for beginner and up, although it would help if you are at least able to hoop around your waist in both directions.

This is a really great opportunity if you feel drawn to the hoop. Baxter's flaying all the way from N. Carolina to teach on the West Coast (Oregon, Seatlle, San Francisco, Los Angeles). Contact me as soon as possible if you'd like to register, since the class is coming up this Sunday. Hope to see you there!

INTRODUCTION TO THE HOOP PATH

This 3-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree, Samurai, and Point; as well as established techniques such as Rolling, Reversing, Breaks, Vertical and Angle Hooping.
Source "Article"!!!

Hello all,
Well, I've got to say, the writer of the story in the Source really did a doozy.
To put it bluntly, he fabricated a "story" about bellydance, complete with an "interview" w/2 members of Gypsy Fire.....The reason I say "interviews", is that I'm not sure that he was present at the same one that Julia and I gave.....we were misquoted, and the man *obviously* had some typical, IGNORANT pre-conceived notions about bellydance, that he simply used us to create "facts" about the dance that would support the simple conclusion that: "....the purpose of bellydancing- to entice arousal" Basically, the usual: bellydancing=stripping...

AAAAAARGH!!!!!! I am so frustrated that we personally, and that bellydancers in general have been portrayed like this again, and in a local, widely read, publication!

I wanted to put the word out there, that this article does NOT represent what we talked about in the interview, and does NOT represent my views about dance, and to let you all know that I am embarrassed to have my name and picture attached to this in any way, shape or form.....
Please write to the Source, if you feel the need to rebut the "story"....I know I plan to....

Thanks!
Quinn

Looking To Find Burning Bend...

My wife Glimmer and I were riding on our art car one night at Burning Man this year and we ran into some cool burners from Bend. Glimmer gave one a dance pole lesson, and they invited us to get in touch if we ever come visit. They said a place called the Grove is fun, and maybe they owned it - or maybe that was their camp; I don't know - it was one of those playa nights so things were a little distorted, and we don't even remember how to get in touch!

If you're reading this, we're coming to visit family this Friday 12/22 until next Thursday, and we'd love to hook up one night. Or if any other burners want to save us from an entire week without fur, fire, and freaks, please get in touch!

We are active Bay Area burners, and we like to build crazy things like www.playatech.com and www.fireinbelly.com - so we're up for the most fun we can have in your neck of the woods without leaving my in laws believing we're a cult...

Burn On,

2007 Gypsy Fire Tribal Bellydance class schedule

Hello all!
Hope you are enjoying the season! While we look towards the end of 2006, it's also time to begin planning 2007....

Gypsy Fire, Bend, Oregon's best-known Tribal Bellydance troupe will resume classes, starting January 2, 2007.

We offer Beginning classes (appropriate for those with no dance experience, or as a review for those who have studied this form before...) in 8-week sessions. This class is a progressive course, so each week you will learn a new slow, and a new fast move, increasing your dance movement vocabulary......you will be dancing in your first class! American Tribal Style bellydance is based on a language of movement from traditional Middle Eastern dance, structured in a way that the group works together IMPROVISATIONALLY to create the dance on the spot, and to communicate with each other through the dance!

Our 2007 schedule is as follows:

Basics 1:  Beginning Tribal:
Session 1:  January 2-February 20
Session 2:  February 27-April 17
Session 3:  April 24-June 12
{Summer break}
Session 4:  July 10-August 28
Session 5:  September 4-October 23
(Mini) Session 6:  October 30-November 20
{Holiday break....See you in 2008!}

Time:  Tuesdays,  8:00-9:00 pm
Location: Terpsichorean Dance Studio 1601 NW Newport Ave.
Tuition:  $60/session   ($30 for Session 6/Mini session)
$9/drop in

Basics 2 is the continuation of Basics 1. Here you will learn further concepts for improvisation: leading and following, formations; and also you will expand your movement vocabulary, with complex movements, turns, and layering of movements. As well, we will cover some basic music theory, and expand on your zill repertoire! ***You must have taken at *least* one 8-week session of classes from Gypsy Fire instructors in order to attend this class. Thanks!
Time: Tuesdays,   9:00-10:00 pm
Location:  Terpsichorean Dance Studio

All classes include warm up and stretching for increasing flexibility and muscle identity: both crucial to gaining greater body awareness and muscle isolation. Please wear comfortable clothing: leggings, yoga pants, a full skirt, and a leotard or midriff-baring top recommended to allow for greater visibility for both student and teacher.

For more information about Gypsy Fire Tribal Bellydance, our classes, or upcoming events, please visit our website: http://www.gypsyfirebellydance.com or call (541)420-5416.

Hope to see you there!
Happy Holidays!

Cascadian meme for marketting

Cascadian meme for marketting

Yes its the holiday season and there are flags for sale so we can spread the meme and free the bioregion from the immanent economic collapse of the global empires. Is this selling out to capitalistic pigs.. well as far as I can tell most of this is just covering expences. Now if anyone can get an industrail hemp producer from the Cascadia bioregion to help make the flag organic that would be nice. One hemp fabric producer (Rawganique.com) for most of Cascadia is centered on Denman Island. So if anyone would like to get them involved their site is

http://www.rawganique.com/
Call toll free 1.877.729.4367

Here is an image of the "Doug" or Cascadian flag:

Currently the Cascadian flag can be bought on mugs, t-shirts, Teddy bears and yes even the classic thong that so many Cascadians are eager to wear. These can be bought (cheaply) at:
smALL FLAGs in Oregon is selling actual flyable "Doug" or Cascadian flags at:

  Good god I have the most amazing friends. It is 1:15 in the morning, I just finished the Bite Of Bend show and it's afterward session at McMenamins and it dawned on me... I have the most amazing friends. From the beautiful, charismatic ladies that I watched perform today to the drummers that layed down the rhythms for me to move to to the members of my own group of fire crazed freaks... I am definitely a lucky man, call it good karma or being blessed or whatever dogma's description you prescribe to. Thank you to all of the beautiful people that I get to share time with on any given day. I am grateful to you all for your energy and your time.

After the Post-Election Celebrations: Examining the Decline of the American Empire

After the Post-Election Celebrations: Examining the Decline of the American Empire

Wow in the following article "After the Post-Election Celebrations: Examining the Decline of the American Empire" the writer, Shepherd Bliss, mentions the idea of Cascadia is a real possiblity:

"The demise of the American Empire will have profound implications for the nation, as well as for the world. “You’re a dreamer,” a close friend and elected official responded when I suggested that perhaps the centralized American Empire might eventually dissolve into smaller, separate countries. Vermont already has a growing independence movement. In Northern California there has long been talk of seceding from Southern California. Perhaps Northern California could join with Oregon and Washington, if they would have us, and call ourselves something like Cascadia."

the article:

After the Post-Election Celebrations:
Examining the Decline of the American Empire
by Shepherd Bliss
www.dissidentvoice.org
November 10, 2006

The Democratic Party, revitalized in part by progressive grassroots groups and hard work, prevailed in the Nov. 7 midterm elections. “I feel like a load has been lifted from my body,” former student radical and ex-California State Senator Tom Hayden said on Nov. 9. at the University of California at Berkeley School of Journalism. “We’ve just moved out of a straightjacket,” a buoyant academic commented.

A time of celebrations has been in order. But after that, lets think about the larger picture of the current state of the American Empire. Signs exists that its power is declining substantially. Little in the post-election coverage has considered this issue.

“Defeat is not an option,” Bush again insisted in his press conference the day after his resounding defeat, referring to the Iraq War. Yet it is precisely defeat in Iraq that stares him in the face, as even many American generals have admitted. This defeat is not just in Iraq, not just of the Republican Party, not just of Bush, and not just on Nov. 7. It goes much deeper. On Nov. 8 Bush once again attempted to mount his Victory horse, though with a changed tone of less arrogance.

Considerable enthusiasm swept the nation among progressives as news came in that Democrats won first the House and then the Senate. Then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was fired. This is all certainly good news. I do not mean to rain on sunny election celebrations, but perhaps its time to take that good energy into deeper considerations of the state of the world and the work that remains to be done.

Much more than the loss of the neoconservative Bush regime was revealed on Nov. 7, if one looks beneath the surface. Some Americans may now relax, hoping that the Democratic Party can fix things. This is not the time to hold back and give Democrats space to get the troops out of Iraq and remedy the many other sins of the Empire.

Now is the time to deepen our understanding of the nation’s imperial role in the world. Most Democrats seem content to shore up American power by making a few minor reforms, rather than attempt to manage the decline in power that is occurring. Many describe the election as a victory for moderate Democrats, especially the centrist Blue Dogs, over the extreme Republicans. This will incline the Democratic Party further to the center.

Internal and external political, economic, and military signs exist that the American Empire is declining. Given space limitations, this essay will focus on Latin America. However, I want to note that the 20th Century American Empire ran on fossil fuels. The world’s supply of petroleum and natural gas is declining, as the demand for them increases, especially from China and India. (See www.energybulletin.net for my writing on this.) So the U.S. is in a mad scramble to secure its oil and gas resources. As fossil fuels decline, so will the American Empire.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LATIN AMERICA

My perspective comes from years of living outside the United States and studying its impact upon other peoples, especially in Latin America. I was raised in the military family that gave its name to Ft. Bliss, Texas, there on the border with Mexico. I spent part of my childhood in Panama, where my military father was stationed. I followed him into the services, though I resigned my commission to protest the Vietnam War.

I studied at Ivan Illich’s Center for Intercultural Documentation, which drew teachers and students from all over the world to Mexico. I met the Brazilian Paolo Freire there and began working with his “cultural action” concept. I worked in Chile during the government of President Salvador Allende in the early 1970s. Then I spent over a decade at Harvard University in various capacities, including doing Post-Doctoral study, and some teaching about Latin America. I have worked on the ground in three of America’s primary colonies -- Puerto Rico, Panama during the nationalist government of Pres. Omar Torrijos, and more recently in Hawai’i.

These experiences lead me to see that a sign of the weakening of the American Empire is the lessening of its control in Latin America -- the Empire’s playground for decades. A shift of power has been occurring from North to South. In Brazil Pres. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party was re-elected for a second term on Oct. 29. Daniel Ortega was re-elected president in Nicaragua on Nov. 5, after three sequential defeats following his first election. These two important events in American history received little attention in the U.S. press, but they reveal a growing opposition to the U.S. in Latin America.

Meanwhile, in oil-rich Venezuela Pres. Hugo Chavez is an outspoken U.S. critic. Cuba remains a thorn in America’s side. In natural gas-rich Bolivia the indigenous leader Evo Morales was elected President in December of 2005 by a large percentage. He works to secure his nation’s natural resources for its people, rather than having them serve the American Empire. In Chile the government of Pres. Michellle Bachelet has taken positions that signal independence from the U.S.

For many years, Latin American countries have been secure neo-colonies of the United States. Though their peoples often railed against “Yankee Imperialism,” America continued to control their governments through a variety of military, political, cultural, and economic means. The extreme importance of Latin America to the U.S. is indicated by the fact that Mexico and Venezuela are among the top five countries providing the U.S. with oil. Mexico even provides the U.S. with more oil than Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela is close behind, according to figures from the Energy Information Administration published in the Oct. 27 Christian Science Monitor.

AMERICA’S MORTAL WOUND

The event of 2001 that stands out the most for Americans was the unprecedented Sept. 11 attack by a group of mainly Saudi Arabian nationals that hit the Empire’s two most powerful symbols -- its financial center at the World Trade Center and its military center at the Pentagon.

That foreign attack on the United States was not a mortal wound to the Empire. The real fatal blow was how the Empire struck back. Unable or unwilling to attack the perpetrators of the 9/11 crime, the wounded Empire struck viciously against the whole country of Afghanistan. Full of the blood of revenge, it then attacked Iraq on spurious grounds. Mainly innocent people perished in those attacks, as the world watched, aghast and in disbelief and disgust, as the U.S. and a few allies have slaughtered between 400,000 and a million people. Such a stain on the Empire will not be easily forgotten.

So America played its military trump card, which has not prevailed. Rather than rectify failed strategies and tactics, it has clung to them tenaciously. The U.S. has sunk deeper into defeat in both Afghanistan and Iraq, thus further revealing its weaknesses. Many who oppose the U.S. have just looked on, waiting patiently, while organizing resistance. The U.S. is now more vulnerable to attack than it ever has been.

In neither of its last two major wars -- in Korea in the l950s and Vietnam in the l960s and 70s -- did the U.S. achieve decisive victories. The U.S. lost the Vietnam War. Many contend it also lost Korea, especially given the current situation in the Koreas. The American Empire seems to have reached its height of power immediately after World War II, though in recent years -- with its accumulation of wealth and the fall of the Soviet Empire -- it has appeared to be more powerful than it really has been, what some describe as a “paper tiger” with a “false economy” likely to collapse at any moment.

“But what will a Democratic Congress do that is better?” Yale scholar Immanuel Wallerstein asked in a Nov. 5 essay on “the rude shock of defeat,” published in the San Francisco Chronicle. “The primary problem of the leadership of the Democratic Party is that it believes, at least as much as the Republicans, that the United States is the center of the world, the font of wisdom, the great defender of world freedom.” In fact, Democrats seem to want “to restore the United States to a position of centrality in the world system.”

In l986, Gore Vidal published “Requiem for the American Empire” in The Nation magazine. He dated the start of the Empire as 1914, when “New York replaced London as the world financial capital… By the end of World War II, we were the most powerful and least damaged of the great nations.” However, by the mid-1980s, the U.S. had become a debtor national. Since then it has sunk even further into debt, especially to China. “Like most modern empires,” according to Vidal, “ours rested not so much on military prowess as on economic power.”

I deliberately do not use words like “fall,” “requiem,” or “collapse” to describe what is happening in the U.S. today, for that would be premature. America still has considerable power and the decline is likely to take years. Much depends upon how America’s leaders and people respond to the changing power alignment in the world. More wars for oil, for example, will further erode our own limited natural resources and any remaining goodwill with other nations. An alternative would be to manage the decline skillfully and take a less dominant role within the community of nations.

Though still the world’s only remaining superpower, there are many signs that the U.S. is loosing its economic primacy. Right before the midterm elections, Bush finally admitted that the Iraq War has indeed been a war for oil. As the U.S. dollar continues to slide and be volatile, there is more talk of using the Euro for the international petro-currency.

Regardless of what the Democrats do, we should expect the Empire to decline further. The post-election enthusiasm can be used as an opening to explore the American soul more deeply, consider how to manage this decline, and then take courageous actions.

Power is shifting East (as well as South), which is why the U.S. fought in Korea, Indochina, and now in the Middle East.

WHAT NOW?

Everything that lives dies -- individuals, planets, and even powerful empires. The American Empire is sliding into decline; the main issue, in my opinion, is how to manage that decline. We can squander our remaining resources and worsen our relationships with other peoples and countries -- as the U.S. government seems intent on doing, having quickly spent the world’s post 9/11 goodwill. Or we can apply our substantial skills and resources to collaborating with others in ways that are characterized by humility and cooperation rather than arrogance and domination.

We have many historical examples of how empires can fall and collapse. The warlike Mayans basically disappeared. Rome ceased, though its remnants remain in Italy. The Soviet Empire collapsed somewhat swiftly, though Russia remains powerful. The British Empire is America’s most immediate ancestor. They all merit our study to understand what is happening today. Is the soft landing of an empire even possible?

The demise of the American Empire will have profound implications for the nation, as well as for the world. “You’re a dreamer,” a close friend and elected official responded when I suggested that perhaps the centralized American Empire might eventually dissolve into smaller, separate countries. Vermont already has a growing independence movement. In Northern California there has long been talk of seceding from Southern California. Perhaps Northern California could join with Oregon and Washington, if they would have us, and call ourselves something like Cascadia.

Such thinking may be premature. But when the Soviet Empire eventually fell, it did so quite quickly, as did the Berlin Wall in l989. When events suddenly come to a head, much can shift. So it is prudent to do contingency planning.

I celebrate that the Democrats handed Bush such a decisive defeat on Nov. 7. But it is not enough. Presumed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has made it clear that she will not even hear the growing chorus of voices calling for Bush’s impeachment. She is more likely to close ranks and seek to extend the life of the Empire, given how indebted she and her colleagues are to corporations that benefit from the Empire’s far reach. The Democrats are unlikely to see their task as managing the Empire’s decline, which will not be popular among many Americans, who continue to benefit from the privileges of that Empire. Before one jumps on the Democrat’s bandwagon, careful consideration of the party’s intentions and actions would be in order.

Some positive signs within the Democratic Party are already emerging. For example, the Progressive Caucus of the Congress -- co-chaired by my own valiant Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and by the heroic Rep. Barbara Lee of Berkeley -- has invited former Sen. George McGovern to speak to the 62-member Caucus next week. He will present ideas from his new book Out of Iraq: A Practical Plan for Withdrawal. Withdrawal has public support from the American people and the military itself, from enlisted men in the field up to generals and admirals. If the Democrats do not call for a timely withdrawal and then work hard with all the hammers and other tools now at their disposal, that would be a bad sign.

Another early test cases for how serious the resurgent Democrats will be is the U.S. armed forces request of $160 billion supplemental appropriations for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the remainder of the fiscal year 2007. The request came a couple of days after the Nov. 7 election. Rep. Pelosi has already vowed not to undercut troops in the field. The military budget of the U.S. is more than the combined military budgets of all the world’s other countries. U.S. arms manufacturers export most of the world’s weapons.

Though the Bush administration now appears to be in decline, he was able to successfully rally the American people for six years by appealing to their desire to retain imperial power with its substantial privileges. The Democrats are likely to do the same, especially when threatened. Though in decline, the U.S. Empire will continue to wield substantial power for years.

A perceptive writer for The Nation, Tom Englehardt, posted “Voters Attack Bush’s Empire” on Nov. 8. He writes, “For vast majorities abroad, the vision of the U.S. as an Outlaw Empire is nothing new.” Englehardt writes about the imperial presidency, but it is more than the presidency. Unfortunately, this imperial posture seems to be adopted by the Congress, as well as most Americans, who seem to feel that we are somehow entitled to rule the world with the American Way of Life. So a change at the top, or even in Congress, is not likely to be enough. We need what Brazilian Paolo Freire describes as “cultural action” to make deeper changes in America.

But at least America finally has one truly independent Senator, Bernie Sanders of Vermont. It is often from the margins of smaller places, like Vermont, that real challenges to power come. If ever there was a time to speak truth to power, it is now, during this post-election opening and teaching moment when at least the imperial presidency has been set back.

America’s future requires a different kind of leadership, not just a different leader or a different party. As one scientist, the geologist Jane Nielson reflected, “I hope that the end of cheap energy will eventually humble us.”

And as the peace activist and advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty Jim Albertini wrote in a flyer for a post-election vigil on the Hawai’i Island, “Democrats, and the American people, must now show by concrete actions, not mere words, that we stand for a different America. Let our actions speak clearly of a just and peaceful partner, rather than a global bully, in an international community of equals where dialogue, not weapons, is the method of solving problems.”

Dr. Shepherd Bliss is a retired college teacher and former military officer who now farms in Northern California. He has contributed to 19 books, including three post 9/11 books, and most recently to “Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace.” He can be reached at: sb3@pon.net.

Cascadia Now Chapters Seek Student Organizers

I would love to see a chapter blossom in the Bend area

the post:

Cascadia Now Chapters Seek Student Organizers
author: Collin S. Ferguson        e-mail: savepac17@yahoo.com
The Cascadian Independence Project seeks students who want to take on a local and regional perspective volunteering for community groups and advocates as well as political organizing in their city, county, state, province, region and country.
Students at Northwestern in Bellingham, University of Washington, SCCC, UW Tacoma, Evergreen, and Portland State University, Portland OR, are starting student chapters for the new regional advocacy group, the Cascadian Independence Project, or Cascadia Now. The group is in its infancy, but intends to keep growing and start student organizations at all Cascadian universities.

"We wanted to create an inclusive group that was an umbrella organization for everything Cascadia," announced the group leader in an email. While the C.I.P. will not deny its inclination towards secession adding that it is the hope of the organization that students will support an investigative platform for Cascadian independence, C.I.P. has stated that it is fully accepting of variation in focus, "We're not here to form a political group where it's our way or the highway." They hope to maintain a loose coalition allowing groups to suit the needs of their communities, and hoping that conferences and conventions will work to keep the focus of the organization as a whole. The C.I.P. wants to emphasize that community engagement is increasingly critical stating "We want our project to fill the gap that our current government(s) has left."

The fundamental belief is that the Pacific Northwest can do it better and that a distant seat of power cannot properly govern everything that Cascadians witness on a daily basis. The C.I.P. wants to strengthen communities, investigate how to lessen dependence on federal government, and build a base of active citizens resolved to unify the Pacific Northwest.

The Cascadian Independence Project, formally the Cascadian Independence Party, hopes to create organizing committees that will connect the spread out groups and market the formation of new groups at local universities, community colleges, and the public at large.

The organization's long term goals highlight work towards progressive change: writing and supporting local referendums, legislative policies and initiatives, as well as spreading the base by encouraging volunteer work, calls to political action, and contests for flag designs, anthems, emblems, logos, battle chants, etc. The organization also hopes to support food drives, first-aid trainings, worker retraining programs, creation and operation of info shops, promoting and participating in recycling and environmental clean ups, sponsoring local events and working as an arm in educational outreach.

The organization is attempting to build support throughout the Pacific Northwest by contacting and gaining support from other like minded groups. Much of their website is currently under construction, which is http://cascadianow.org, however an article about bioregionalism is available and you can contact the organization for more information at cascadianow@gmail.com.
pdf format for anyone to download and get others interested (maybe
as wall paper the whole book on a public accessable wall might be an
idea). I would recommend dowloadingt it and passing it on before it
is yank from the site:

Sorry Ernest Callenbach .. but I think the need for the paradigm
shift should out weight the payment for royalties in this case.

Modern-Day Secessionists Will Hold a Conference on Leaving the Union

Modern-Day Secessionists Will Hold a Conference on Leaving the Union

Here come the new Green Mountain Boys. The Middlebury Institute, a think tank devoted to the study of separatism, secession, and self-determination, is planning the First North American Secessionist Convention in Burlington, Vt.

More than a dozen secessionist organizations are likely to send representatives to the gathering on November 3 and 4, the director of the institute, Kirkpatrick Sale, said. The room at the Wyndham Burlington hotel can hold about 50 people, he said. The organizers have picked the right state for this radical gathering: Vermont was an independent republic between 1777 and 1791.

"Vermont has a very strong self-identity," Mr. Sale said, and added that New England states were talking about secession around the time of the War of 1812.

Why secession? "It's the only principled, moral way to go," Mr. Sale said. The goal is not to take over any national government but to "simply absent ourselves from it," he added.

Mr. Sale is working with an emeritus professor of economics at Duke University, Thomas Naylor, who is a founder of the Second Vermont Republic, an association that seeks to return Vermont to an independent republic.

Representatives from both red and blue states appear to be joining in — although "joining" is probably not the right word. According to the Web site MiddleburyInstitute.net, responses as of June had come from "Hawaii Nation, Alaska Independence Party, League of the South and several of its chapters, Southern National Congress Committee, Southern Caucus, Christian Exodus, New State Movement, Puerto Rico Independence Party, Parti Quebecois, the State of Jefferson, and the Second Vermont Republic."

A strong response has also come from secession supporters in "Cascadia" (Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia) and "Delmarva" (Delaware, Maryland, and the Virginia Peninsula), among other areas, according to the site. Scholars, researchers and journalists professionally interested in secession may be in attendance, as well.

Convention attendees will first "assess what stages these various organizations are at, how far along they are, and how many members they have," Mr. Sale said. They will then discuss what they are planning to do and go over various successful secessionist strategies.

"It's an expression of frustration," a history professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, John Patrick Diggins, said.

"I don't think secession is a viable plan," a Columbia University professor of history, Eric Foner, told The New York Sun. "But ‘getting out from under America' is an old tradition. There have been such currents throughout American history, but in the half-century after the Civil War, they were very much reduced, for obvious reasons."

At the beginning of the Civil War, New York's mayor thought the city should secede from the Union and trade with both the North and South, Mr. Foner said.

"It would be a great loss to the U.S. if Vermont absconded," a Columbia University sociologist and School of Journalism professor, Todd Gitlin, told the Sun.

If Vermont seceded, it would be more difficult to reach an Electoral College majority, Mr. Gitlin added. "He wants to elect a president in a corrupt" system, Mr. Sale said, when told of Mr. Gitlin's comments.

In an article in Adbusters magazine in January, Mr. Sale wrote, "For one thing, as hurricane Katrina has glaringly shown, the Federal government is a clumsy, bureaucratic, politicized, and insensitive instrument (and as the rebuilding will show, corrupt as well), and states and localities that give themselves over to depending on it are in real trouble."

Noting the tradition of secession in American history, Mr. Sale told the Sun that he doesn't know why it should be impractical for Vermont to secede. "The first group of secessionists was the Founding Fathers," he said. "The American Revolution was in fact a secession from the United Kingdom."

But a professor of history at Harvard University and author of the forthcoming book "The Declaration of Independence: A Global History," David Armitage, said, "It seems to be one of the few observable laws of world history since 1776 that any state that has declared its own independence will thereafter prevent any part of that state from declaring its independence."

Mr. Sale in the past has pointed out that the Constitution is silent on the matter of secession and that the Tenth Amendment reserves powers not delegated by America to the states or the people. But the Supreme Court decision Texas v. White et al. in 1868 declared that the Constitution does not allow states to secede. Sometimes, towns have revolted.

The founder of National Review, William F. Buckley, said secession is not the easiest thing to do because one has to decide "where to secede to." Many who in effect seceded to Canada in protest eventually "inched their way back" to America, he added.

Belly Dance Showcase At the Grove Tomorrow Night!

Join the High Desert Belly Dance Guild for its quarterly Middle Eastern Dance Showcase on September 27th at The Grove. Beginning at 8:30 p.m., our show will feature a variety of regional talent performing a few of the many different styles of belly dance. Expect performances from "Old Style" Egyptian and classic Cabaret dancers to troupes breaking the mold with the latest in Tribal Fusion stylizations.

Our first showcase was a huge success – come and join us for this one! The Guild’s quarterly showcase is open to the public and all Middle Eastern dancers who are Guild members are eligible to perform regardless of experience. Guild shows provide an opportunity for amateur dancers to gain performance experience, as well as a venue for professional performers to promote their talents within the greater Central Oregon community. Dance spaces are limited and dancers must pre-register by emailing sahara64@gmail.com.

Established in 2005, the High Desert Belly Dance Guild supports Central Oregon's belly dance community. The mission of the Guild is threefold:
• To promote belly dance to the public as a legitimate art form.
• To provide professional development and performance opportunities for members of the belly dance community.
• To facilitate communication among members of the belly dance community and to provide opportunities for community-building and support.

For more information on the High Desert Belly Dance Guild or to become a member, please visit our website at www.highdesertbellydance.org.

Techno, House?

I'm gonna be visiting Bend next month (and I've been considering moving to the area) and I am wondering if there is anything there in terms of a house/techno/electronic dance music scene/community?

DJ bars, undergrounds, campouts, party people, etc... ...if anyone could refer me to any information about such stuff in the Bend Area, that would be much appreciated. I imagine there has to be at least *something* in a town that big but I'm guessing it's not horribly easy to find.

& no, I'm not really talking about Burners, though I have nothing against Burners I usually find it difficult to connect with them.

Walden by Henry David Thoreau free online

I have been reading (while listening to) Walden by Henry David Thoreau again. I have tried to read this many many years ago (back in my high school years (in the late 70s and earler 80s). I think Walden by Henry David Thoreau is more relavent today in the era of Corporatism, debt slavery and resourse wars; a period of bioregional thinking; an age of needed action (such as civil disobience); a time for a return to the simple, local and the organic (Mother Nature)

Is there a growing health division between the two Cascadias (US-Amerikan versus Canadian)?

Could living under US Amerikan hegomony be killing us in regards to health and life conditions? There is a growing health division between the two Cascadias (US-Amerikan versus Canadian).

articles with URLs:
B.C.'ers live longer, healthier and greener

By Jeff Nagel
Black Press
Jun 21 2006

We live longer. Drive less. Burn less fuel. And we're not as fat.

On a series of measures, British Columbians outperform Americans who live in the nearby U.S. states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, according to a new report that will be released today (Wednesday).

The Cascadia Scorecard, published by the Seattle-based Sightline Institute to track trends in the Pacific Northwest, links B.C.'s gains on several fronts to the trend toward more compact and walkable neighbourhoods that's on the rise in Greater Vancouver.

"Sprawling land-use patterns not only promote sedentary lifestyles, but also expose residents to elevated risk of injury or death in car crashes," the report concludes. "Sprawl can be hazardous to health."

Among the findings:

- Twelve per cent of B.C.'s population is obese, compared to 21 per cent in the northwest U.S. states, where obesity is rising four times as fast.

- B.C. residents spend less time driving in cars and don't die in crashes as often. We drive an average of 8,300 kilometres per year and our rate of auto crash deaths is the lowest in Cascadia (the northwest U.S. plus B.C.).

- More Vancouverites (72 per cent) live in compact neighbourhoods than in six other major Pacific Northwest cities.

It all adds up to people living longer, healthier lives north of the border.

As of 2005, British Columbians reached a life expectancy of 81.1 years. That's up three years since 1990 and it's significantly higher than the 78.8 year average in the U.S. northwest.

"If B.C. were a nation, it would have the world's second longest life expectancy, trailing only Japan," the report says.

The main author of the report, Sightline research director Clark Williams-Derry, admits there are other factors behind B.C.'s healthier record.

He said Canada's universal health care system is a key difference that separates B.C. from the U.S. and improves life expectancies.

Immigration is another possibility.

"The province has welcomed many new wealthy (and healthy) Asian immigrants over the past several decades, which may have boosted the province's longevity statistics," the report says.

"British Columbia also has lower infant mortality rates and fewer homicides than its southern neighbours."

No single factor or combination of them fully explains the longer life expectancy here.

Instead, Williams-Derry looks to B.C.'s "relatively strong" record in containing urban sprawl.

"Places where you have to drive a lot are places where you have high levels of car crashes and low levels of walking or biking for exercise," he said.

The report says development using smart growth principles - a blend of stores and services in residential areas, creating better street connections and reduced parking requirements - has helped create more livable neighbourhoods where residents don't have to drive as much as in conventional suburbs.

Williams-Derry said old assumptions that suburbs have better air than congested downtowns are also falling away.

Urban cores have become cleaner as pollution standards improve.

Research indicates a greater air threat comes from time spent in traffic breathing other vehicles' exhaust, he said.

"If you're trying to escape to the suburbs to get cleaner air, not only are you not getting cleaner air in your neighbourhood, if you spend a lot of time on the highway you may be undoing some of any benefits you do get."

Cross-border issues will get more scrutiny next week when Surrey hosts the annual conference of the Cascadia Mayors Council.

Is your commute a killer?
Report shows suburbanites are less healthy than downtowners -- and cars are to blame

Chad Skelton, Vancouver Sun
Published: Wednesday, June 21, 2006
People who live in high-density core cities are significantly healthier than residents of sprawling suburbs, says a report being released today by Sightline, an environmental think-tank based in Seattle.

That's because the extra time suburbanites spend in their cars each week makes them fatter -- increasing their risk of chronic disease -- at the same time that it makes them more likely to be killed or injured in a car crash.

Overall, the Sightline report of the region known as Cascadia -- the northwest coastal region of North America -- found that the average life expectancy in B.C. is 2.5 years longer than in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

And while that gap is due to a number of factors -- including our public health care system and a recent influx of "wealthy and healthy" immigrants from Asia -- the report argues the difference in the time we spend in our cars is a major factor.

The report say B.C. residents drive about 45 per cent fewer kilometres every year than those in northwest states and, as a result, have one-third fewer traffic fatalities per capita.

British Columbians drive less, the report found, because our communities are more dense, making it easier to walk, bicycle or take the bus to work than to drive.

Vancouver is by far the most dense city in Cascadia, the report found, with 91 per cent of its residents living in "compact neighbourhoods" (those with more than 12 people per acre), followed by Victoria at 80 per cent.

In comparison, in the county around Portland, Ore. -- often held up as a model of high-density urban living -- 45 per cent of people live in compact neighbourhoods.

In the area around Seattle the figure is just 34 per cent.

"For us [Americans], it's nice to have a place nearby that has shown that it can create a high-quality of life that doesn't sprawl," said Clark Williams-Derry, the lead author of the report.

Vancouver has also seen a far more dramatic increase in high-density living than its U.S. neighbours over the past 15 years -- fuelled mainly by the condo boom in Yaletown and Coal Harbour.

Michael Mortensen, a planner with the city, lives in a two-bedroom condo at Bute and Alberni with his wife, Ellen Clague, and their children Lucas, 4, and Lauryn, 1.

The family doesn't own a car.

Mortensen bikes to work at city hall while Clague works at home some days and takes transit or bikes the rest.

Mortensen conceded that, with two kids, space has become tight.

But he said the benefits of downtown living outweigh the inconveniences.

"It's the life," he said. "It's easy to live and to shop. There's a seawall right next to us. We've got memberships to the aquarium, Science World, the art gallery."

Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan said he was proud of the Sightline report's findings.

"I think Vancouver is leading the way in a new paradigm for building cities," he said, saying he'd like to see more high-density development in the city.

While Vancouver is the most dramatic example of high-density living, B.C. suburbs also fare better than their counterparts south of the border.

"It's kind of a different ball park," said Williams-Derry. "Even a place like Abbotsford, as sprawling as it might seem, is relatively compact by U.S. standards."

Indeed, 45 per cent of Abbotsford residents and 50 per cent of those in Surrey live in compact neighbourhoods.

That's well behind Vancouver at 91 per cent but it's far better than the Seattle suburb of Pierce County, at 13 per cent, and the Portland suburb of Clackamas County, at just nine per cent.

And high-density suburbs can make a real difference, said Williams-Derry.

Most of the driving people do in a week is not their daily commute, he said, but the combination of all the little trips they take -- to the grocery store, soccer practice and the mall.

"Everyone thinks of the commute as the big thing, but it is the minority of driving," he said.

So while the residents of Vancouver's suburbs may have a nasty commute ahead of them each day, many of them -- especially in more compact communities like White Rock or New Westminster -- have a better chance than U.S. suburbanites of being able to walk to the corner store for milk.

And even slight improvements in walkability can have a profound impact on people's health.

For example, Williams-Derry said, one study found that an extra two-to-three-minute walk each day is enough to reduce someone's weight by, on average, nearly half a kilogram.

"If you walk more, you're going to weigh less," he said. "The differences are fairly small, but over time they really add up."

cskelton@png.canwest.com

Even our suburbs are more compact

Percentage of population in each community living in "compact neighbourhoods" -- those with at least 12 residents per acre (0.4 hectares).

City of Vancouver 91%

City of Victoria 80%

Greenspan Sounds Alarm on Oil Supply

[“It’s official. Peak Oil hits the marketplace.” – Michael C. Ruppert]

article:

Greenspan Sounds Alarm on Oil Supply

Reuters
Washington
Wednesday, June 7, 2006
http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/06/07/business/gspan.php
In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, this material is distributed without profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes.
Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman, offered a grim view on Wednesday of the world's rising vulnerability to high crude oil prices, saying he was skeptical that oil producers could pump enough crude to meet future demand.
Since the 1940s, U.S. consumers have shown an uncanny ability to shoulder rising energy prices, but consumers' immunity to oil price shocks was running out, Greenspan said.
"The United States, especially, has been able to absorb the huge implicit tax of rising oil prices so far," Greenspan told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in his first congressional testimony since leaving the U.S. central bank earlier this year. "However, recent data indicate we may finally be experiencing some impact."
Greenspan was appointed Fed chairman by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, and served until Jan. 31 of this year.
Lawmakers would occasionally call on Greenspan to speak on energy issues when he was chairman, but his views were still highly sought on Capitol Hill.
Since 2004, crude oil prices have doubled. Since the start of 2002, the cost of a barrel of oil has soared by $50.
Crude oil prices have stubbornly stayed above $70 a barrel despite OPEC and other world producers pumping to capacity. Prices are still within striking distance of the $75.35 a barrel record set in U.S. futures in April.
Greenspan warned that a big oil price increase could spur "a significant contraction in the economy."
Greenspan said that few of the world's dominant producers, aside from Saudi Arabia, see the danger that rising crude oil prices pose to the economy, and to their sustained ability to sell oil.
Saudi Arabia is the only country with enough untapped reserves to meet future short-term energy crunches, and has unveiled a $50 billion plan to lift output capacity by 1.5 million barrels per day by 2009.
Greenspan said while U.S. businesses had so far been able to improve productivity to compensate for costly energy, households were suffering from higher gasoline prices.
"Current oil prices over time should lower to some extent our worrisome dependence on petroleum," said Greenspan, who now runs a private consultancy. "Still higher oil prices will inevitably move vehicle transportation to hybrids, and despite the inconvenience, plug-in hybrids."
Greenspan warned that the buffer between supply and demand was extraordinarily thin and that price spikes were a risk.
"The balance of world oil supply and demand has become so precarious that even small acts of sabotage or local insurrection have a significant impact on oil prices," he said, adding that global refining capacity was still too limited.

15 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD PLANT TREES (found at Forest Defenders tribe.net)

15 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD PLANT TREES (found at Forest Defenders tribe.net)

http://www.ridgefieldpark.org/content/50/83/default.aspx

1. Trees store carbon and clean the atmo sphere. In 50 years, one
tree generates $30,000 in oxygen, recycles $35,000 of water, and
removes
$60,000 of air pollution.

2. Tree shade reduces air conditioning costs in residential and
commercial buildings by 15-50 percent. Do you need a tree planted to
the South or West of your house?

3. Properly placed and cared for trees and shrubs significantly
increase residential and commercial property values. Would you like a
new tree for your property?

4. Trees provide habitat for a large vari ety of wildlife. Do you
like bird songs?

5. Trees connect us with nature and rein force spiritual and
cultural values.

6. Trees prevent or reduce water pollu tion in NJ’s streams, rivers,
darns, and estuaries.

7. Trees prevent or reduce soil erosion.

8. Trees help recharge ground water and sustain stream flow.

9. Properly placed screens of trees and shrubs decrease traffic
noise along NJ’s busy streets and highways. Do you have a site that
needs a tree along Rt. 46?

10. Trees screen unsightly views and provide privacy for NJ homeowners.

11. Trees make life more pleasant by softening harsh outlines of
buildings.

12. Trees add beauty and grace to any community setting. They make
life more enjoyable, peaceful, and relaxing. Do you enjoy walking
through
Ridgefield Park?

13. Research shows that trees help reduce stress in the workplace and
speed hospital patients’ recovery. Do you hear the sighs of relief on
NYC buses as they reach RP?

14. Trees provide a multitude of recreation opportunities.

15. Trees, planted as memorials, leave a valuable gift for future
generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Homeowners often ask for assistance with trees that are on their own
private property. We manage only the public trees, but we can
provide a list of New Jersey Certified Tree Experts with whom we have
contact.

The attached document suggests guidelines for selecting an Arborist.

The Shade Tree Commission's sidewalk program is still available for
homeowners who wish to repair or replace their sidewalks. Through
this program, a homeowner can be reimbursed for some expense incurred
due to damage by street trees. Applications are available at the
municipal building or by calling 201-641-4950, extension 640.

Mulch can protect a tree by conserving moisture and preventing grass
and weeds from growing too close to the trunk. But too much mulch
smothers the tree just the same as it smothers the weeds. Mulch
belongs around the tree but not against it.

Re: 15 Reasons why we should plant trees
Today, 10:22 AM
For those that have read Gene Sharp's "From Dictatorship to Democracy" and are trying to awaken bioregional identity and revolution within their bioregion (such as Cascadia and what some of us would call an Evergreen Revolution) this is a great way to get the word out... plant a tree (ideally a native tree that is not genetically modified). In Gene Sharp's list of 198 Methods of Nonviolence against dictatorship I would put this under the "Symbolic public acts" number 29 "Symbolic reclamations"

Gene Sharp's "From Dictatorship to Democracy"
http://www.hermanos.org/nonviolence/dictodem.html

Maybe we need a "Tree Army" ("Stik Sojurs" in Chinook Jargon) to cover all of Cascadia in trees... ahh imagines of McBeth and the marching forest comes to mind.

Feds to sell off Public Lands!

The Attack on Public Lands by the Bush Administration

Our public lands are under attack by the Bush Administration. They have an aggressive agenda to sell off our National public lands to corporate interests, and to privatize and outsource inherently Federal jobs.

Currently the Bush Administration is pushing to auction off 300,000 acres of Forest Service (FS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. The idea is to sell off lands that are considered low value or hard to manage in order to save money and help balance the budget. The money raised should equal out to about a billion dollars which would then go into rural schools and county governments. This has a nice ring to it on a superficial level but stinks if you look even a micrometer below the surface. Linking public land sales with schools and county governments would put pressure every year to continue funding these institutions through the same process over and over again. Pressure would mount to sell off more and more public lands under the need to continue funding schools and governments. It’s been done before using revenue from logging on federal lands to fund schools. It sounded good on paper but not in reality because it became evident that linking timber harvest levels to school funding promoted unsustainable logging levels. On another level, some of these lands have been identified as valued and have important qualities such as potential wild and scenic status while others while small and isolated are still after all public lands and should be subject to critical review on a case by case basic with public input.

The idea that the federal government is selling the land to save money is pretty ironic considering it‘s wasteful projects, military spending sprees, and fraudulent mismanagement. Take wasteful spending for example:

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - As Congress moves to restrict lobbyists' influence and to control government spending, a new study shows pork-barrel spending continued unabated in the 2006 budget. The 16th annual Congressional Pig Book issued by Citizens Against Government Waste -- a private, nonprofit organization -- identified almost 10,000 pork projects in 2006. Although the number of projects is about 30% less than last year, the total cost climbed to a record $29 billion, up 6.2%.

Some funny projects:
$13.5 million for an Irish group that funds the World Toilet Summit?
$500,000 for a teapot museum?

Of course every project is different but hey if there’s talk of selling off public lands because we don’t have money well that doesn’t make much sense. If the government was serious about balancing the budget then why are we in trillions of dollars of debt when we once had a surplus? Consider that we sent some 200 billion dollars to Iraq. The money sent to Iraq is under serious allegations of massive fraud and mismanagement. So it’s painfully obvious that the issue is not really about money. The money is there to fund the F.S. and the schools and local governments without breaking the bank.

Consider the attempts on both the Park Service and the FS to privatize and outsource under the guise of streamlining and cutting costs. The National Park Service is now considering contracting out the entire operations of three national parks, according to a memo from NPS Director Fran Mainella. Previously, the National Park Service looked to outsource certain types of jobs, such as maintenance, among several parks but is now looking at park units in their entirety for future bids by private firms. The three parks being considered are Boston National Historical Park, San Juan National Historic Site (in Puerto Rico) and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Altogether, these three parks employ 312 NPS employees on a full-time basis.

The U.S. Forest Service is studying how to contract out more than two-thirds of its total workforce by 2009, according to agency planning documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). The agency is also looking to potentially privatize large portions of its environmental, law enforcement, fire-fighting and research operations.

“In a 2001 review of Department of Defense outsourcing, Ann Markusen identified four major problems: The process was driven by commercial concerns and lobbying; the process did not increase efficiency; the process ignored the threats of commercial monopoly and ‘undue political interference‘; and the process did not hold contractors accountable for poor performance. Markusen is a senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations and is a professor of Public Policy and Planning at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.-Michael Jamison of the Missoulian”

It’s not news that private companies work for and within Federal Agencies. It’s not an inherently bad thing at all but when your talking about outsourcing and privatizing core jobs that make up the heart of an organization then you’re really talking about elimination or making an organization ineffective to do it’s mandate. In the end it’s going to be the lands and the public that pays the price for a policy that will benefit a few.

Our public lands are one of the best things that make America a great place to live. They are precious and should be treated that way and should not be managed for profit or political expediency but for future generations. Outsourcing will not provide public lands security and selling the public lands for short term economic gain will not solve our real economic problems. Our lands provide clean water, jobs, habitat, recreational opportunities, and most importantly a blue print for healthy ecosystems that we need to survive. If we start selling off land simply to bolster up a budget or fix an economic problem then what will future generations think after there’s nothing left.

To comment on the plan for selling off public lands and outsourcing please contact your local representatives the BLM or the Forest Service. Comments can be sent to USDA forest Service, SRS comments, Lands 4S, 1400 Independence AVE., SW, Mailstop 1124, Washington DC, 20250-0003 or e-mialed to SRS_Land_Sales@fs.fed.us
